Dr. Tabish Mehdi writes in his autobiography: Our elderly friend, the late Mufti Abdul Rauf Munsif Mubarakpuri, narrated an incident from his student days more than once. He told us that since there has never been an arrangement for breakfast at Darul Uloom Deoband, students who wish to have breakfast make their own arrangements. Those students whose financial condition is not good content themselves with only lunch and dinner. A Bengali companion of the Mufti Sahab wrote an application addressed to the Mohtamim (Vice-Chancellor) Sahab. The content of his application was somewhat like this: "Hazrat! I am a student from Bengal, studying in the Moquf Alaih class at Darul Uloom. There is no arrangement for breakfast at Darul Uloom, and my financial status is not such that I can arrange morning breakfast on my own. Back home, I used to manage by eating dry, leftover night bread. I have been securing good marks in the madrasa, and Alhumdulillah, my academic condition is good at Darul Uloom as well. I secure good marks and compete well with my peers. However, studying until noon without eating or drinking anything is extremely difficult for me, and its impact could also fall on my education. If Hazrat Wala could make some arrangement for my breakfast, it would be a great kindness; my education would be completed, and there will be no drop in my marks." The student submitted this application to the clerk of the Mohtamim office and left. When Hazrat Mohtamim Sahab arrived and saw the application, he smiled and summoned the student through a peon. The student arrived, greeted him with Salaam, and stood waiting. After a short while, Hazrat Qari Sahab raised his head and asked, "Is this application yours?" He replied, "Yes, Hazrat!" Hazrat Qari Sahab remarked, "The state of your capability and competence is such that you spell breakfast (Nashtah) with a 'Te' (ط) instead of a 'Te' (ت) as 'Nashtah' (ناشطہ). Yet, you desire such a big relaxation that a special case be made for you against the rules and regulations of Darul Uloom." Hearing this critical remark from Hazrat Qari Sahab, the student immediately, without any hesitation, addressed him and said, "Hazrat! Do you write breakfast (Nashtah) with a 'Te' (ت)? Then, after a brief pause, he said, "The correct word is indeed 'Nashtah' (ناشطہ) with a 'Te' (ط), because it creates 'Nishat' (energy/freshness). This morning breakfast keeps a person active, energetic, and smart throughout the day. If writing Nashtah with a 'Te' (ت) is common, then it needs to be corrected." After a slight smile, Qari Sahab dismissed him and told the office clerk, "Munshi Ji! Although there is no system for breakfast at Darul Uloom, keeping in view this student's alertness of mind and intelligence, an amount equivalent to his breakfast should continue to be paid to him every month from my personal account."
