Yahya bin Yahya narrates: When the terminal illness of Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy upon him) prolonged and his final hour approached, all the scholars and jurists from Medina and other cities gathered at the Imam's house so that they could benefit from a final meeting with the Imam of the time and be blessed by his counsels. ​Yahya bin Yahya says: "At that time, there were more than a hundred scholars present, including myself, visiting Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy upon him). I would go to Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy upon him) repeatedly and offer my greetings so that in this final hour, the Imam's gaze would fall upon me, and that gaze would become a means of my salvation in the Hereafter. I was in this state when the Imam opened his eyes, turned towards us, and said: 'All praise is for Allah who sometimes made us laugh and sometimes made us weep. We lived by His command, and by His command, we give up our lives.'" ​After this, he himself said: "Death has arrived, and the time to meet Allah the Exalted is near." The attendees respectfully asked: "What is your inner state at this moment?" ​He replied: "I am very happy at this moment because of this gathering of the Awliya (Friends of Allah), as I consider the people of knowledge to be the Awliya of Allah. After the noble Prophets (peace be upon them), there is no one more beloved to Allah the Exalted than the scholars. Furthermore, I am also happy because my entire life was spent in acquiring and teaching knowledge, and I believe all my efforts in this regard are accepted and appreciated. This is because the details of all obligatory acts (Faraidh), Prophetic traditions (Sunan), and their rewards became known to us from the tongue of the Messenger (peace be upon him). For instance, Hajj carries this much reward and Zakat carries this much. And no one can know all this information except a student of Hadith, and this is, in essence, the true inheritance of Prophethood." ​Yahya bin Yahya says: After this, Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy upon him) narrated a tradition of Rabi': "Teaching someone the rulings of prayer is better than giving all the wealth on the face of the earth in charity, and resolving someone's religious confusion is superior to keeping voluntary fasts." And from the narration of Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy upon him), he stated: "Giving religious advice to someone is better than performing Jihad in several battles (Ghazwat)." ​The narrator says: After this conversation, Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy upon him) did not speak again and surrendered his soul to the Creator.
