Hakim Mahboob ur Rahman, a graduate of Deoband and the eldest son of Maulana Mashiyatullah Saheb, states: "When I was studying in Deoband, I stayed with Hazrat Allama Anwar Shah Kashmiri Saheb in his residential room. Hazrat had a habit of chewing paan (betel leaf). One day, I prepared a paan and presented it to him. He had just placed it in his mouth when Sheikh-ul-Hind was seen approaching from the front, coming to his student for some need. Shah Saheb was informed of Hazrat's arrival. I can never forget the state of anxiety that overcame Shah Saheb at that moment regarding the arrival of his teacher and the haste with which he tried to remove the paan from his mouth. He quickly cleaned his mouth and stood at the door of the room like a completely humble servant to welcome his master."
