Hazrat Sufyan Thauri (may Allah have mercy on him) would not allow more than about three people to sit with him (during his lectures). However, one day when he started his lecture, he saw that the gathering had become very large. Seeing this, he stood up in anxiety and said, "We have been caught unawares" (meaning, we are committing a sin and we do not even realize it). "By Allah, if the Commander of the Faithful, Umar bin Al-Khattab, saw a person like me sitting on the seat of teaching in this magnificent gathering, he would immediately remove me and say that a person like you does not possess the capability for this." Furthermore, it was his habit that whenever he sat down to dictate Hadiths, he would be awe-struck and fearful. If a dark cloud passed over them, he would remain silent until it passed, and he would say, "I fear that there might be stones in it which may be rained down upon us."
