A question arises in the mind: What is the sign of beneficial knowledge? Yes, there is indeed knowledge that brings benefit. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us a supplication: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit." Accordingly, there are two signs of beneficial knowledge.
The First Sign: The servant is granted the ability (Tawfeeq) to act upon this knowledge. Once, Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Shafi Sahib (RA) asked the students, "Tell me, what is the meaning of knowledge?" They kept offering answers like knowing, recognizing, etc. Hazrat remained silent. Finally, a student said, "Hazrat, please tell us yourself."
He replied: "Knowledge is that light after attaining which one cannot find peace without acting upon it. If this is the state of the heart, then the knowledge is beneficial. Without action, a person finds no restlessness; if they happen to commit a sin, they find no peace until they weep and beg Allah for forgiveness—there is a fire burning inside."
The Second Sign: A sense of awe and reverence increases within the human heart:
"Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge." (Surah Fatir)
See, the glorious Quran has given the sign: indeed, among the servants of Allah, it is those with knowledge who fear Him. Humility, awe, and fear increase in a person's heart.
Imam Ghazali (RA) states: "The great scholar is the one to whom the harms of sins become more apparent. The clearer the damages of sins become to him, the further back he will draw away from them."
