Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him) used to say: "If speaking is silver, then remaining silent is gold." — (Ihya Uloom-id-Din: 3/178) Someone asked Hazrat Hakim Luqman, "How did you reach such a high status?" He replied, "I achieved it through the blessing of speaking the truth and avoiding useless talk." Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) used to keep pebbles in his mouth to avoid vain or meaningless speech (La-Ya'ni). — (Ihya Uloom-id-Din: 3/179) Hazrat Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) states: "He who speaks too much makes many mistakes; he who makes many mistakes commits numerous sins; and for the one who commits numerous sins, Hellfire is most fitting for him." — (Fayd al-Qadir: 6/283) Hazrat Hasan Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say: "The person who cannot protect his tongue cannot protect his religion." — (Ihya Uloom-id-Din: 3/179)
