Guntur accident: Jagan Mohan Reddy gets temporary relief from High Court, likens it to Kumbh Mela

Incident Details: A 53-year-old worker, C. Sanghaiah, was tragically killed by a vehicle in YSRCP President Jagan Mohan Reddy's convoy in Satnapalli, Palanadu district on June 18, 2025. The accident took place when Jagan was on his way to Rentapalla village to pay his respects to a party worker who had allegedly committed suicide a year ago after being harassed by TDP leaders and police. The police initially blamed a private vehicle for the accident, but later confirmed that it was Jagan's bulletproof Toyota Fortuner. Following the accident, the police registered a case against Jagan Mohan Reddy under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 49 (aiding) of the Bharatiya Naya Sanyatha. Jagan's driver Ramana Reddy, personal assistant K Nageshwar Reddy, former MP YV Subba Reddy, former MLA Parni Venkat Ramaiah, and former minister Vidadala Rajani were also named as accused. The police seized Jagan's bulletproof vehicle and started examining video footage, drone footage, and witness statements. Guntur Superintendent of Police S Sathish Kumar said: "After analysis of various evidence It was learnt that the deceased had come under the wheels of Jagan Mohan Reddy's vehicle. Jagan's defence and political controversy: Jagan Mohan Reddy termed the case as a political vendetta and said that he was being deliberately targeted. He said in his plea that his vehicle, which weighs about 4,000 kg including the security personnel, could not have caused the injuries that the deceased sustained. He claimed that the police had initially blamed a Tata Safari for the accident, but later his vehicle was targeted under political pressure. Jagan strongly criticised the current Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, saying that during his tenure, no such restrictions were imposed on the rallies of Naidu or his ally Pawan Kalyan. He wrote in a long post on X: "Z-plus security is the right of former Chief Ministers, not a favour. We had given prior notice of our visit, but the government did not arrange for rope parties or pilot vehicles. Isn't this accident a result of government failure?" Jagan also said that he immediately informed his workers, Belasani sent Kiran and Ambati Ram Babu to help the affected family and announced a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh. He asked Naidu what he had done about the accidents that had happened during his tenure? Chandrababu Naidu's response: Chandrababu Naidu strongly condemned the incident and accused Jagan of not even bothering to meet or contact the family of the deceased. He said: "Was it not your responsibility to control the law and order situation? You gathered 45,000 workers in the tobacco market, while permission was for only 100 people." Home Minister Vingalapady Anitha also accused Jagan of mismanaging the crowd and said that Jagan was waving from his car while Sanghaiya was being crushed under the car. Court decision: The Andhra Pradesh High Court, while hearing Jagan's plea, granted him interim relief on June 27, 2025 and directed the police not to take any coercive action till July 1. The bench headed by Justice Y Laxman Rao said: "Despite all precautions, gatherings like the Kumbh Mela Accidents happen. How are the people inside the vehicle held responsible in this incident?” The court rejected Advocate General Damlapathi Srinivas’ request to file a reply by July 1 and posted the case for Friday. Political storm and public reaction: The incident has created a storm in Andhra Pradesh politics. The YSRCP called it an act of political vendetta by the Naidu government, while the TDP accused Jagan of irresponsible behavior. A user on X wrote: “This incident is the result of political rivalry. Naidu is filing false cases out of fear of Jagan’s popularity.” On the other hand, another user said that Jagan should have ensured the safety of his workers. In the video footage, Sanghaiya was seen coming close to the vehicle while throwing flowers and slipping under it, but the convoy did not stop. Conclusion: This incident is not only a tragic accident but also reflects the political turmoil in Andhra Pradesh. Jagan Mohan Reddy alleges that the Naidu government is using the accident as a political weapon to suppress his voice, while Naidu says Jagan shirks his responsibilities. The court's decision is a turning point in the matter, but the final outcome depends on the investigation and the next hearing. The incident is a lesson for political leaders that security and order should be the top priority in public gatherings.
