Parables of Wisdom: Insights from Tanbih al-Ghafilin

Parables of Wisdom: Insights from Tanbih al-Ghafilin

❶ It is narrated about an ascetic (Zahid) that he would eat vegetables and salt without bread. Someone asked him, "Do you survive on just this?" He replied, "I am shaping my world for Paradise, while you shape it for the restroom. That is, you consume desirable foods only to pass them into the restroom, whereas whatever I eat is solely to sustain myself for worship and obedience so that I may ultimately reach Paradise." ❷ It is said that when Ibrahim bin Adham (may Allah have mercy on him) was about to enter a public bath (Hammam), the bathkeeper stopped him and said, "You cannot enter without paying the fee." He began to weep and supplicated, "O Allah! This is a place frequented by devils and transgressors, yet I am not allowed to enter here for free. How then will I be able to enter Paradise, the abode of Prophets and the Truthful?" ❸ It is narrated that in the heavenly teachings and divine revelations of some Prophets (peace be upon them), it is stated: "O son of Adam! You buy Hell at a heavy price, yet you do not take Paradise at a cheap price." The explanation for this is that a transgressor hosts a feast for fellow transgressors and considers spending hundreds of rupees as insignificant—this is his bargain for Hell, acquired at a high price. On the other hand, if he wishes to spend a single dirham for the pleasure of Allah to feed some needy people, it feels burdensome to him, even though that very deed was the price for his Paradise. ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ Book: Tanbih al-Ghafilin (Page No. 88-89) Author: Nasr bin Muhammad Ibrahim Abul Laith al-Samarqandi Selected by: Islamic Tube Pro App
