The Repayment of Kindness

The Repayment of Kindness

Banu Qurayza, which is a famous tribe of Jews, had aided the disbelievers of Quraysh in the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwa-e-Khandaq), violating their treaty with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). After free from the Battle of the Trench, the Muslims attacked Banu Qurayza and captured almost the entire tribe. Imam Maghazi Ibn Ishaq has written an incident of a prisoner named Zubayr bin Bata among the prisoners of Banu Qurayza, that he had done some kindness to the famous companion of Ansar, Hazrat Thabit bin Qais, during the famous war of Bu'ath in the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah). At the time of this battle, Zubayr bin Bata had grown old and blind. Hazrat Thabit came to him and asked, "Do you recognize me?" He replied, "How can someone like me forget someone like you?" Hazrat Thabit said, "I want to repay your kindness today." He said, "Indeed, the generous repays the generous (Innal kareema yajzil kareem)." Hazrat Thabit came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and requested for Zubayr's freedom. Upon his request, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) freed him. Hazrat Thabit came and informed him. He said, "What is the pleasure in the life of such an old man who has no family?" Hazrat Thabit presented himself in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and obtained the decree for the freedom of his family, and came and told him. Then he said, "If there is a family in Hijaz but no wealth, how is it possible to pass through life?" Hazrat Thabit went and got his wealth returned as well. Now that blind Jew asked Hazrat Thabit, "What happened to Ka'b bin Asad?" He replied, "He has been killed." Then he asked, "What became of Huyay bin Akhtab and Azal bin Shamu'al?" He replied, "They too have been killed." He asked, "What was the fate of the rest of the people?" Hazrat Thabit said, "All have been killed." So the old Jew said to Hazrat Thabit, "The repayment of my kindness is that you also unite me with my nation, for what good is there in life after them?" Hazrat Thabit pushed him forward and his neck was also struck off. We used to say we wouldn't live without you, So we went ahead and fulfilled that promise.
