A stranger appeared in a king’s court seeking a job. He was asked about his qualifications, and he said: I am a siyasi (political adviser). (In Arabic, a siyasi means a shrewd person who solves problems through reward and understanding.) The king already had a crowd of politicians around him, so he was made in-charge of the special horses’ stable, whose previous in-charge had recently died. A few days later the king asked him about his most expensive and beloved horse. He said it is not of pedigree. The king was astonished; he summoned the groom from the jungle and asked him. The groom said, the horse is of pedigree, but its mother died at its birth, and it was raised alongside a cow, having drunk her milk. The courtier was summoned. How did you find out that the horse is not of pedigree? He said, when it eats grass it lowers its head like cows do, whereas a pedigree horse takes the grass into its mouth and raises its head. The king was very impressed by his insight and sent to his house, as a reward, grain, ghee, roasted fat-tailed sheep, and the finest bird meat. Along with this, he appointed him in the queen’s palace. A few days later the king asked the courtier for his opinion about the queen. He said, her manners are like those of a queen, but she is not a princess. The ground slipped from under the king’s feet. He immediately summoned his mother-in-law. He laid the matter before her. The mother-in-law confirmed it. She said that this is the truth: your father had asked my family for our daughter’s hand at the very time of her birth, but our daughter died at the age of 6 months. So, to establish close ties with your kingdom, we adopted someone’s child as our daughter. The king asked the courtier how he knew the queen was not a princess, and he said that the queen’s treatment of the servants is worse than that of animals. Princesses do not behave like this. The king was quite impressed by his insight. Once again he gave a lot of grain and buffaloes as a reward and appointed him in his own court. Some time passed, and he summoned the courtier again and asked about himself. The courtier said, promise me safety of life. When the king promised, he said, you are neither a prince nor is your conduct that of kings. The king flared up, but he had already given a guarantee of safety. He went straight to his mother’s palace; the mother said it is true. You are the son of a shepherd. We had no children, so we took you and raised you. The king summoned the courtier and asked how he knew. He said, when kings give rewards and honors to someone, they give them in the form of diamonds, pearls, and jewels, but you bestow buffaloes, goats, and other food items.
