The Steadfastness of a Youth

The Steadfastness of a Youth

During this same journey to Samarkand, a scholar brought a youth to meet this humble servant (Sheikh Peer Zulfiqar Ahmad Naqshbandi) and told me that this is that fortunate young man who used to openly give the call to prayer (Azaan) five times a day and pray during the era of the Russian Revolution. Hearing this, this humble servant was astonished and asked, "How was that?" The youth removed the cloth from his back. When we looked, there were scar marks on every single inch of his back. This humble servant asked, "What is the matter?" He began to narrate his story. He said, "When I gave the Azaan for the first time, the policemen arrested me and beat me severely. I intentionally acted as if I were a madman. The more they beat me, the more I laughed. At one time, several policemen would get tired of beating me, but I would not get tired of taking beatings in the name of Allah. I was also given electric shocks, but I endured them. I was made to lie on ice for several hours, hung upside down for entire nights, branded with hot objects, and my nails were pulled out, but I made them feel as if I were insane. I intentionally did crazy things. After beating me for a year, the police sent me to a mental asylum. There too, I spent a year in the same manner until the doctor wrote a report stating: 'This person is insane, his mental balance is disturbed, he does not harm anyone, and he remains absorbed in himself. Therefore, he should not be arrested again.' Consequently, based on that doctor's report, I was released. When I came out, I built a small mosque-like place somewhere; there, I would give the Azaan five times a day and pray five times openly." This humble servant stepped forward, kissed his forehead, and said: "This nation has no need for swords, Whose youth possess a selfhood made of steel." This humble servant kept looking at this youth's face repeatedly and kept envying his steadfastness. "From eternity, loftiness has been blended into our nature, We know how to be cut down, but we do not know how to bow."
