The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has forbidden lying even to young children. Accordingly, Hazrat Abdullah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Holy Prophet ﷺ was present at our house. My mother called out (extending her closed fist towards me), "Come here! I will give you something" (as mothers usually do to call a child close). The Holy Prophet ﷺ asked my mother, "What did you intend to give him?" My mother replied, "I wanted to give him a date." Upon this, the Prophet ﷺ remarked: أَمَا إِنَّكِ لَوْ لَمْ تُعْطِهِ شَيْئًا كُتِبَتْ عَلَيْكِ كَذِبَةٌ. (Al-Targhib wat-Tarhib, 3/370) "Know that if you had not given him anything, a lie would have been recorded against you in your scroll of deeds." From this Hadith, it is learned that many such things which are not considered lies in society can still incur the sin of lying. Giving false consolations and making fake promises to children is commonly prevalent everywhere, and it is not considered a lie at all. However, according to the above-mentioned saying of the Prophet ﷺ, this too falls under lying, from which care should be taken to abstain. (Rahman Ke Khas Bande, Page: 336)
