The Unique Benefit of Reading

The Unique Benefit of Reading

Sheikh Salman al-Ouda writes in his book "Zanzana": Once I complained to my Sheikh: "I read a book but I don't remember anything from it." Thereupon, he gave me a date and said: "Here, chew this!" Then he asked me: "Have you grown bigger now?" I said: "No." He said: "But this date has assimilated into your body; thus, a part of it became flesh, some became bone, some muscle, some skin, some hair, some nails, and pores, etc." Then I realized that every book I read gets assimilated; thus, a part of it strengthens my vocabulary, some increases my knowledge, some refines my morals, and some develops my style of writing and speaking, even though I may not actively perceive it. There is a Chinese proverb: "When a man reads 10 books, he travels 10,000 miles." Gorch Fock says about books: "Good books are not those that satisfy our hunger, but good books are those that increase our hunger... the hunger to know life..."
