Ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suffered another major setback. Amritsar North MLA and former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has resigned from the party's primary membership as well as his seat in the Legislative Assembly. Following AAP's release of its first candidate list of 40 names on October 31, three MLAs have quit the party in just two days.
Why Did Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh Resign?
He sent his resignation letter directly to the Assembly Speaker and posted a detailed statement on X.
He had been publicly critical of the party high command's leadership and decisions for an extended period.
In June 2025, he was suspended from the party for five years on charges of alleged anti-party activities.
Political circles are heavily speculating that he may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to contest against AAP in 2027.
Preceded by Resignations in Samana and Sanour
Just a day earlier, two party MLAs from the Patiala district resigned from AAP's primary membership. Both leaders are also rumored to be in talks to join the BJP, with their resignation letters widely shared on social media:
Chetan Singh Jouramajra (Samana): A former minister in the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government, Jouramajra was reportedly aggrieved after the party leadership replaced him with former Akali leader Surjit Singh Rakhra as the constituency in-charge for Samana.
Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra (Sanour): Also dissatisfied with the party high command's governance style, Pathanmajra faced a sexual assault case after which he travelled to Australia. He was detained by police upon his return and claimed the charges were part of a politically motivated conspiracy.
Note: Reports regarding these leaders joining another political party remain speculative as none of the resigning MLAs have officially confirmed their next political move.
