The Fitnah of a Fake Life

The Fitnah of a Fake Life

Among the dangerous diseases afflicting the moral existence of human beings, the temptation (Fitnah) of living a life based on lies and exaggeration is at the top of the list in today's era. There was a time when the private aspects of human life remained hidden, but in the era of social media and technology, nothing has remained private anymore. The result is that a person's family life, work and business, social interaction, wealth and assets, etc., are all now being displayed on social media platforms. What I ate today, what I wore, whom I met, and to which important people and powerful circles I have access—all of this is now broadcast on social media. One result of this is that the fitnah of a fake life is at its peak in our society at this time. A fake life means that a person tries to appear and become something outwardly that they actually are not. If a person possesses a basic level of knowledge, but forcefully searches for minor details from books to try to establish a heavy impression of their scholarship before others. If they do not have much wealth and property, the person shows off and portrays themselves as a multi-millionaire in a fake manner. Similarly, even if a person does not hold an influential position or status, they tell lies to give others the impression that "I am very powerful and well-connected." One aspect of the fake life of social media is also that a person shares pictures of meetings with famous personalities to boast in their circle of friends that "I have connections way up high." They even borrow clothes, jewelry, etc., from others or wear fake items to create such an environment that others get intimidated. In the era of social media, this trend and disease has become common among us. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not like a boaster. Hazrat Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) said that boasting is an extremely bad deed. Similarly, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Allah Almighty does not like the "Jawwaz", meaning one who boasts in an arrogant manner. There was a time when making false claims based on lies and boasting was considered disgraceful and inferior in society, but in the era of social media, this work has taken the form of a business and an industry. Fake life is the practical example of this mindset. The servants (men and women) of Allah build their lives around truth and straightforward, upright speech (Qaul-e-Sadeed). Honor does not lie in establishing one's awe and grandeur by telling lies, but rather in being at peace by speaking the truth. A person living with the support of a fake life always faces the danger of when their secret will be exposed (when the bubble will burst). They do not even remember what story they had told to whom to serve their purpose. The result is that after some time, such a person becomes famous as a liar and a fraudster. People talk behind their back about them and their fake lifestyle. Sometimes, the person adopting a fake life faces disgrace and humiliation in this world itself, because the people whom they misled on the basis of a false illusion do not hesitate to take retaliatory actions to compensate for their loss. There is a great need to be very cautious about the use of social media and its effects on our real life. Human beings are very weak, and they do not understand, falling prey to the fitnah of a fake life and getting trapped in its net. Its only solution is that a person turns towards Allah (Rujoo ilallah). Before someone humiliates them, they should themselves adopt a life based on truth and reality. Indeed, Allah is very Generous and Forgiving. Constantly pray to Allah Almighty that Allah protects all of us from embarrassment and disgrace, and veils our faults.
