O Lord! Return my light to me!!
(Note: The addressees of this manifesto are only the students of Sharia sciences.) The people of gnosis have defined Sharia knowledge as the light of Allah that is illuminated in the chest of the servant. This light is properly felt in the heart like the flame of a lamp. Rather, the student spends his life worrying that this light might be extinguished! This is the exact meaning of the saying of Malik bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him): "Knowledge acquired for action breaks the servant down!" A student stays away from many sins solely so that my light is not snatched away from me. Sometimes, a forbidden glance darkens the heart for a long time. Despite being familiar with the sweetness of the connection with Allah, the heart receives no motivation, becomes paralyzed, and gets eclipsed. Sometimes, if a gathering of laughter, jokes, and loud giggles becomes prolonged, the heart suddenly shuts tight while sitting. Just as a lamp is extinguished by a strong gust of wind. If it is not illuminated again through remembrance (Dhikr) and recitation with full intention, it remains closed. Argumentation and debates also take away the light of knowledge. If a person gets involved in a fruitless debate, the heart becomes properly hardened. For a while, the humility (Khushu) of prayer and the pleasure of intimate supplication leave. In fact, I have seen that if the voice is ever raised before parents, the heart suddenly feels dead! Desolation overcomes it. It is as if all the volumes of knowledge suddenly detach from the existence and stare, saying: what have you done?! There is nothing greater than the glitz and glamour of the world to darken the world of the heart. Sometimes, just looking at the luxury of the people of the world dazzles the insight. Then what will be the state of that student whose sitting and standing (company) is among those whose hearts are overflowing with the love of the world, and the axis of whose speech is the world?! Sometimes ask the people of knowledge what they go through when they miss the congregational prayer?! Doesn't the world feel estranged?! Food becomes tasteless. Steps become heavy. The gathering of friends becomes a burden. Until a person begs before his Lord: Oh Lord! Return my light to me!! And this guidance/ability is also only from Allah. When Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) sat as a student before Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), the teacher said: "I feel that Allah has illuminated the light of knowledge in your chest, see! Do not let it be extinguished by the darkness of sins!" And the lights of many of us have been extinguished, but we do not realize it. We are lifeless statues installed outside the shop of knowledge. What else! Sahl al-Tustari (may Allah have mercy on him) said an enlightened sentence: "It is forbidden for a heart to have light enter it while there is something in it that Allah Almighty dislikes!" It is forbidden for light to enter that heart which contains darkness! Which contains the love of the world! Which establishes a relationship with a non-Mahram! Which has been blackened by the ominousness of oppressing Allah's creation! Whose sting of "I" (ego) has not been removed! ... A student should be worried at all times that my light might be snatched away from me. Make this worry a constant concern. Inevitably, he will have to abandon many hobbies, say goodbye to many companies, and review many behaviors. Then perhaps he might become an embodiment of the saying of the early predecessors: "When one of us acquired knowledge, that knowledge would be visible in his behavior and demeanor."
