This incident of accepting Islam is both astonishing and instructive. Astonishing because even after a lapse of nearly one and a half thousand years since the revelation of the Quran, no one had noticed this point until now, which became the catalyst for an American doctor's conversion to Islam. It is instructive because pondering, reflecting, researching, and exploring the Divine Book remains just as effective a means today for opening the doors of guidance and knowledge for the servants of God and setting them on the straight path as it was at the time of the revelation of the Divine Message. A strange and extraordinary incident took place in an American hospital, and under its influence, an American doctor became a Muslim. In the said hospital, two delivery cases arrived simultaneously one day. One woman gave birth to a boy and the other to a girl... On the night these two children were born, by chance, the supervisor doctor was not present on the spot. The wristbands containing the mother's name were also not tied to the wrists of both children. As a result, both children got mixed up, and it became difficult for the doctors to identify which child belonged to which woman, even though one of them was a girl and the other a boy...!
Among the team of doctors supervising the deliveries was a Muslim Egyptian doctor who possessed great expertise in his field. He was well-acquainted with the American doctors and had a deep friendship with an American doctor on his staff. Both doctors were extremely worried about how to find a solution to this problem. The non-Muslim American doctor said to the Egyptian doctor, "You claim that the Quran explains and clarifies everything, and all kinds of problems are encompassed in it. So now you tell me, which child belongs to which woman?"
The Egyptian doctor replied, "Yes, the Holy Quran is undoubtedly a clear text in every matter, and I will prove it to you. But give me a little time so that I may first satisfy myself in this matter." Consequently, the Egyptian doctor specifically traveled to Egypt for this purpose and inquired about this issue with some scholars (Shaykhs) of Jamia Al-Azhar, presenting the account of the conversation he had with his American friend. An Azhari scholar replied, "I do not possess insight into medical matters and issues. However, I will recite a verse from the Quran. You ponder and reflect over it. If Allah wills, you will find the solution to this problem in it." Therefore, the scholar recited the following verse: "Translation: The male shall have the equal of the portion of two females." (An-Nisa: 11). The Egyptian doctor began pondering and reflecting over this verse, and upon going deeper, he finally found the solution to this difficulty. Thus, he returned to America and told his friend in a confident tone that the Quran had proven which child belonged to which mother. The American doctor asked in great astonishment, "How is this possible?"
The Egyptian doctor said, "Give us the opportunity to test the milk of both women, and the solution to this puzzle will be revealed." Consequently, as a result of analysis and research, it was discovered which child belonged to which woman, and the Egyptian doctor informed his non-muslim friend of this result with complete confidence. The doctor was amazed and bewildered as to how this was discovered. The Egyptian doctor explained that what came to light as a result of this research and analysis was that "the mother of the boy had twice the amount of milk compared to the mother of the girl." Furthermore, the amount of minerals and vitamins in the milk of the boy's mother was also double that of the girl's mother. Then, the Egyptian doctor recited the relevant verse of the Holy Quran in front of the American doctor ("The male shall have the equal of the portion of two females"), through which he had found the solution to this problem, the puzzle that had left both doctors deeply troubled. Consequently, that American doctor immediately embraced Islam.
A similar incident had also occurred during the era of Hazrat Ali al-Murtaza (may Allah be pleased with him). To show how Islam solved such complex issues in moments fourteen hundred years ago, that incident is being presented here:
During his caliphate, two women gave birth at the same place and on the exact same night. One gave birth to a boy and the other to a girl. The mother of the girl placed her daughter in the cradle of the boy's mother and took the boy. The mother of the boy claimed, "The boy is mine." This case was brought before him (may Allah be pleased with him). He ordered that the milk of both women be weighed; the one whose milk is heavier will be the mother of the boy...!!!!
