GRAP-1 Enforced in Delhi-NCR: Air Turns ‘Poor’, Ban on Coal and Wood in Tandoors and Diesel Generators

Delhi’s air has started worsening once again. After the Air Quality Index (AQI) entered the ‘poor’ category, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Wednesday enforced the first stage of the ‘Graded Response Action Plan’ (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR.

How much did the AQI rise?

According to the commission, Delhi’s AQI was 179 on 20 October, which rose to 244 at 2 pm on 21 October. This falls in the ‘poor’ category. As per forecasts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, the AQI is likely to remain in the same category in the coming days.

What is banned under GRAP-1?

Use of coal and wood as fuel in tandoors at hotels, restaurants and open eateries is prohibited.

Diesel generators are permitted only in emergencies or situations of absolute necessity.

When is each GRAP stage enforced?

GRAP-1: AQI between 201 and 300

GRAP-2: AQI between 301 and 400

GRAP-3: AQI between 401 and 500

GRAP-4: AQI above 450

Why does the air worsen every year?

Around Diwali, stubble burning and other factors cause air quality to decline, making it difficult even to breathe. To tackle this, the government enforces GRAP every year.
