An Incident from the Court of Hazrat Umar (R.A) / Rights of Children

An Incident from the Court of Hazrat Umar (R.A) / Rights of Children

In the court of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), a father filed a case against his son, claiming, "He does not fulfill my rights!" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) questioned the boy, who replied, "O Ameer al-Mu'minin (Leader of the Faithful)! Is it only the father who has all the rights over the children, or do the children also have some rights over the father?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Children also have rights binding upon the father." The boy said, "I wish to hear those rights." He said, "The right of a child upon the father is that he should choose a noble woman to have children with! And when the child is born, he should give them a good name so that it brings blessings! And when they attain maturity of understanding, he should teach them manners and provide them with religious education!" The boy said, "My father did not fulfill even a single right among these. When I was born, he named me 'Ju'al', which means 'the dung beetle'! And he did not teach me even a single letter of religion; he kept me completely blank from religious education." Hearing this, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became very angry with the father, reprimanded him severely, and dismissed the case, saying, "Go and first compensate for your own wrongdoing, and after that, complain about the wrongdoing of your son!" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) dismissed the case and told the father, "You have violated rights even more than he did. Go and do not treat your children in such a manner."
