Don't Just Be a Glass, Become a Lake

Don't Just Be a Glass, Become a Lake

A young man was quite distressed with the affairs of his life. One day, he met a dervish and narrated his condition to him. He said, "I am very worried. These sorrows and troubles are now beyond my tolerance. It seems perhaps only my death can deliver me from these griefs." The dervish listened to his words and said, "Go and bring some salt." The young man was surprised as to what his problem had to do with salt, but he brought it anyway. The dervish said, "Put a handful of salt into a glass of water and drink it." The young man did exactly that, and the dervish asked, "How did it taste?" Spitting it out, the young man said, "Very bad, completely salty!" Smiling, the dervish said, "Now take a handful of salt and come with me to the lake across from us." Arriving in front of the lake filled with clean water, the dervish said, "Go ahead, throw this handful of salt into the water, and then drink the water of this lake." The young man started drinking the water, so the dervish asked, "Tell me, how is its taste? Does it still taste salty to you?" The young man replied, "No, this is sweet. It's very good." The dervish sat beside the young man, held his hand, and said: "Our sorrows are exactly like this salt. The same amount of salt that was put in the glass was put into the lake. But the water in the glass became bitter, while the water of the lake was not affected at all by a handful of salt. Similarly, humans also perceive the taste of hardships according to their own capacity (Zarf). When you face any sorrow, expand yourself; do not remain a glass, instead become a lake. Allah Almighty does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. Therefore, we must always believe that no matter how many sorrows come, they will not be beyond our tolerance..." ــــــــــــــــــــــــــ📝📝ــــــــــــــــــــــــــ Narrated.
