Amazing Anecdotes of Absorption in Knowledge

Amazing Anecdotes of Absorption in Knowledge

To what extent the righteous predecessors, scholars of Hadith, and jurists were overwhelmed by their preoccupation with knowledge can be gauged from the following strange and interesting incidents: (1) Regarding Imam Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Yaqub al-Asam, Imam Naysaburi narrates: "Once, I went to his mosque to meet him. It was already time for the Asr prayer. Sheikh Abu al-Abbas al-Asam went up to the minaret (the high place for calling the Adhan) to give the call to prayer. However, upon reaching there, instead of delivering the Adhan, he began to recite in a very loud voice: 'Al-Rabi' bin Sulayman informed us, Al-Shafi'i informed us...' When he realized what he was doing, he laughed, and those who heard him were also greatly amused. Then, he delivered the Adhan." (2) Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi has written on the authority of Ibn Shahin that Imam al-Hafiz Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Muhammad al-Baghandi once came to the prayer mat to lead the prayer. He said the Takbeer-e-Tahreema, but instead of reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, he started reciting: 'Luwayn narrated to us, and Shayban bin al-Farrukh al-Ayli informed us...' Seeing this, the followers behind him corrected him by saying 'Subhan Allah', after which he began reciting Surah Al-Fatiha. (3) Allama Ibn al-Jawzi has written that Qazi Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Mahmud al-Nasafi al-Hanafi was a great scholar of jurisprudence, an ascetic in the world, and a man of strained means. One night, during a period of extreme poverty, he was deeply engrossed in his studies when he suddenly found the specific legal ruling (Juz'iyyah) of jurisprudence he had been searching for. Upon seeing it, he entered such a state of ecstasy that he stood up and began to dance in his house, exclaiming, 'Where are the kings of the world and their princes?' His wife was left astonished by this sight. (4) Hazrat Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani (may Allah have mercy on him) used to stay up all night resolving complex matters. Despite staying up night after night, he would not feel even a bit of fatigue, and the phrase on his tongue used to be: 'Where are the sons of kings to experience these pleasures?' (Ma'alim Irshadiyyah, Footnote 80). ____📝📝📝____ Book: Thought-provoking and Useful Matters for Scholars and Students (Ulama aur Talaba ke liye Fikr Angeez aur Karamad Baatein) Page Number: 59 - 60 Author: Mufti Salman Sahib Mansoorpuri Selection: Islamic Tube Pro App
