Air India crew member arrested for smuggling gold at Mumbai airport

On June 16, 2025, the Mumbai Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a male Air India crew member at Mumbai airport for smuggling 1.373 kg of foreign gold. The flight AI-116 had arrived in Mumbai from New York on June 13. The details of the incident were not found during the initial search, but during further investigation, the accused revealed that he had hidden the gold biscuits wrapped in black tape in the baggage service area. The DRI recovered 1,373 grams of gold worth Rs 1.42 crore. The accused confessed that he had smuggled gold several times in the past. The DRI also arrested the mastermind of the smuggling network, who recruited the airline staff. Both the accused were arrested under the Customs Act, 1962 and sent to judicial custody. Earlier, Air India crew members were also caught smuggling gold at Chennai airport in December 2024 and Kannur airport in May 2024. The conclusion is that these incidents raise questions about the security system of the airlines. The ongoing investigation by the DRI is expected to identify other members of the smuggling network. Air India should tighten the surveillance of its crew.
