June 17, 2025, New Delhi India's Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri revealed that the discovery of a large oil deposit like Guyana in the Andaman Sea is imminent, which could contain 184,440 crore liters of crude oil. This discovery could increase India's economy from 3.7 trillion to 20 trillion dollars, which will reduce dependence on oil imports and boost economic growth. Details Puri said that after the Krishna Gaudavari basin, traces of oil are now being found in the Andamans. "It is only a matter of time before we discover a large deposit like Guyana in the Andamans." After drilling 43-44 wells in Guyana, the 41st well found 11.6 billion barrels of oil. In India, ONGC drilled 541 wells in FY24, the highest in 37 years, at a cost of Rs 37,000 crore. India imports over 85% of its crude oil and is the world's third largest importer. Oil discoveries in the Andamans could make India self-sufficient in energy. Currently, oil production is limited to Assam, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Mumbai High, and the Krishna Gaudavari basin.
