1. Who are the accused?

Three accused have been identified in this heinous crime:

Monojit Mishra (31 years), a former student of the college and former president of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). He was associated with the students’ union of the college and used to visit the college often.

Zeib Ahmed (19 years), a first-year student, a resident of Topsia area of ​​Kolkata. He was involved in the students’ union activities with Monojit.

Parameet Mukherjee (20 years), a second-year student, both belong to the middle class.

Trinamool Congress student wing president Tarankar Bhattacharya has denied any connection with Monojit in any high-ranking position. He said:

“We admit that we had no idea that one of our former students could commit such a heinous act. He was not an active member of our student wing.”

However, the case has sparked a political uproar, with Opposition Leader Suvindu Adhikari strongly criticising the Kolkata Police and the state government.

2. Arrest and remand of the accused:

The police took immediate action and arrested two accused, Monujit Mishra and Zeb Ahmed, from Siddharth Shankar Rai Sheshav Adhyayan on 26 June 2025. The third accused, Parmeet Mukherjee, was taken into custody from his house on the morning of 27 June. The three accused were produced before the Alipore Court that evening, where the police sought a 14-day remand, but the court sent them to judicial custody till Tuesday, 1 July.

The Kolkata Police have sealed the college campus, and all evidence has been collected from the guard room. The mobile phones of the accused have been seized, and the CCTV footage of the college is also being examined to find more evidence. Kasba police station has registered an FIR and started investigation.

3. FIR details:

The incident took place on the night of June 25, 2025 between 7:30 and 10:50 pm. According to the victim student, Monujit Mishra had proposed marriage to her, which she rejected. Monujit convinced her to stay in the college to talk. The student was waiting for him in the college union room when Monujit, Zeb, and Parmeet reached there. Monujit forcibly took the student to the guard room, where he locked the door and raped her. Zeb and Parmeet stood guard outside.

The accused not only committed this heinous crime but also made a pornographic video of the student and threatened to make it viral. The student pleaded for release with folded hands, but the accused did not listen to her. At that time, no one was present in the college, which further emboldened the accused.

4. Medical report revelations:

The medical examination of the victim was conducted at the Kolkata National Medical College (CNMC), the report of which further highlighted the gravity of the crime. According to the report, the student’s body bore marks of forced sexual intercourse, biting with teeth, and scratching with nails. The police are considering this medical report as the most important evidence in the case.

Public prosecutor Suren Ghoshal, citing a Supreme Court judgment, said:

“If one accused commits the rape and the others help him in any way, then it will be considered a case of gang rape.”

Therefore, the case has been registered as gang rape, and all three accused are being considered equally guilty.

5. Protest and NCW’s response:

As soon as the news of the incident spread, the college students started a strong protest against the accused. The students took to the streets and demanded justice for the victim. On the other hand, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the case. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Kolkata Police Commissioner demanding an immediate and thorough investigation in a timely manner.

The NCW said:

“This is a very serious matter. We are committed to providing medical, legal, and counseling facilities to the victim student and to providing her with compensation.”

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and Joint CP (Crime) Rupesh Kumar confirmed the case and said that the police are investigating the matter with full vigour.

Political controversy and similarity with the RG Kar case:

This incident took place when Kolkata was still reeling from the gruesome rape and murder case of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In the RG Kar case, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered on August 9, 2024, which had sparked protests across the country. The main accused in the case, Sanjay Rai, was sentenced to life imprisonment on January 18, 2025, but the victim's parents and several doctors had called it insufficient and demanded the death penalty.

The father of the RG Kar case expressed deep disappointment over this new incident and said:

"Such incidents are happening again and again. After what happened to my daughter, people took to the streets, but still this trend did not stop. The government should play a big role in this."

Opposition leader Suvindu Adhikari termed the case as a failure of the Kolkata Police, saying that when the incident happened, a large number of police personnel were deployed for the Rath Yatra arrangements.
