Incident details: Heavy monsoon rains wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh from June 20 to July 15, 2025, resulting in 106 deaths. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 62 of these deaths were directly due to rain-related disasters such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, and lightning strikes, while 44 deaths were reported due to road accidents. The rains also caused severe damage to infrastructure. 384 houses were completely destroyed, while 666 houses, 244 shops, and 850 cattle pens were damaged. 171 drinking water schemes were shut down, including 142 in Mandi district, 18 in Kangra, and 11 in Sirmour. Besides, 199 roads are closed for traffic, including 141 in Mandi, 35 in Kulu, 10 in Kangra, 8 in Sirmour, 3 in Una, and 2 in Chamba. According to the Meteorological Department, due to heavy rains, the temperature in many areas, including the state capital Shimla, dropped by one to two degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in Una and Dholakia was recorded at 32.5 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has Rains are expected to continue till July 21. Relief operations and government measures: The State Disaster Management Authority, local administration, police, home guards, SDRF, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are jointly engaged in relief and rescue operations. In Mandi district, which was the worst affected, 65 people were rescued from Bhard, Deji, Payala, and Rakshoi villages. 402 people have been shifted to five relief camps, out of which 348 are from Mandi. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhku met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday and informed him that the state has suffered a loss of about Rs 1,000 crore due to flash floods and cloudbursts. He appealed to the Central government for immediate assistance.
