Tirupati Venkateswara Temple: Stampede during special darshan, 6 killed, dozens injured

A stampede broke out at the Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirupati while collecting tokens for special darshan, affecting over 4,000 devotees. According to initial information, the accident took place due to administrative negligence and crowding, in which about 6 people lost their lives. According to the details of the accident, a female devotee, Mallika, was waiting for her turn at the token counter when she suddenly fell ill. The doors were opened to shift her to the hospital, which caused panic in the crowd and a stampede broke out. On Wednesday night, thousands of devotees from across the country arrived for the 10-day special Vaikuntha darshan, which is scheduled to begin on Friday. Explaining the incident, Bhanu Prakash Reddy, a board member of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), said that 91 counters were opened for distributing tokens and these doors were to open on Thursday morning. He further said that 6 devotees were killed and 40 people were injured in the stampede, while medical facilities are being provided. He sincerely apologized to the public for the incident and assured that strict action would be taken after the investigation. In the viral videos on social media, police personnel can be seen trying to control the crowd. TTD Chairman BR Naidu has blamed the administration for the incident and said that the accident was a result of administrative negligence. He said that the stampede broke out due to the opening of one of the side doors. One of the injured has been identified, and Chief Minister Naidu will meet his family today.
